In further research, we want to focus on deepening the typology and creating a precise framework for the typification of urban green spaces for all the selected types of development. This current study consists mainly of the qualitative indicators of green spaces, and therefore the intention is to also evaluate the quantitative indicators of green space creation, such as vegetation structures (number of trees and shrubs), communication systems, and amenities. This study is primarily concerned with the built environment of the second half of the 20th century, but it also aims to explore contemporary work in urban green space design and thus to expand knowledge with new innovative approaches that can be implemented within the buildings under study.

The primary limitation of this literature review is the lack of standardization in results derived from different methods. A more detailed assessment would require linking cooling potential outcomes to a standardizing factor, such as the area of BGI objects or vegetation fraction within the study area, which would enable a comparison of the significance of differences between the groups. However, identifying a suitable standardization factor is challenging due to diverse methodologies and geographic or climatic differences. Additionally, the review employed an arbitrarily defined set of keywords for database searches. Expanding the types of search phrases could potentially yield better results. Furthermore, no objective method was used to select equally sized sets of articles based on the specific methodology type or geographic location, potentially introducing biases.

It is also important to realize that this study has some limitations, which also suggests some paths for future research directions. Firstly, it is important that the analysis of the studies published in 2024 can be reviewed at the end of the year, since the data collected only make this count until the end of June of that year. Another limitation of this study is that the frequency of the themes identified corresponds to the entire analysis period of the past decade. This does not make it possible to trace an evolution in the frequency of themes over this period. This type of analysis would reveal rich new insights that would enable us to shape the evolution of the topic in the coming years. Another area to explore is the long-term impacts of integrating smart city technologies with sustainable urban planning. This involves assessing how the convergence of these two paradigms affects urban resilience, resource management, and quality of life over extended periods. Longitudinal studies could provide valuable insights into the durability and adaptability of these integrated strategies.
